Matching hardwood stairs to an existing floor
How to stain new oak or walnut treads so they belong to a 10-year-old GTA hardwood floor instead of fighting it.
Exact is a lie. Belonging is the job.
A 2014 red-oak floor has yellowed. New white oak is cooler. New red oak is pink until it is not. We sample on site, leave the sample in the actual light for a day, and get a sign-off. That is slower than guessing from a fan deck. It is why the stair does not look like a patch.
Contrast is allowed
Walnut treads against a white-oak field is a decision, not a mismatch. Painted risers with a clear oak tread is another. Accidental mismatch is the failure mode.
