Typical dwelling stairs, Part 9. The inspector still has the last word. We will not build a fail.

This drawing would typically pass a dwelling-stair inspection.

  • Pass · Maximum rise. 180 mm is within the 200 mm dwelling maximum.
  • Pass · Minimum run. 255 mm meets the 210 mm minimum run.
  • Pass · Tread depth (run + nosing). 280 mm tread depth meets the 235 mm minimum.
  • Pass · Nosing projection. 25 mm nosing is inside the typical 0–25 mm window.
  • Pass · Handrail required. 915 mm handrail height sits in the 865–965 mm band.
  • Pass · Graspable profile. 40 mm circular profile is graspable.
  • Pass · Guard height. 900 mm meets the 900 mm dwelling-stair guard.

Failed inspection

A 2x6 cap, a short guard, a nosing that trips. We redraw to Part 9, then we build. Pretty that fails is not a stair.
